About Coimbra
Once the capital of Portugal, it is home to one of the oldest universities in Europe, whose traditions echo through its cobbled streets and vibrant academic life. Overlooking the Mondego River, Coimbra enchants visitors with its medieval architecture, soulful fado music, and warm hospitality. Whether you're exploring ancient libraries, strolling through botanical gardens, or enjoying a riverside sunset, Coimbra offers a timeless and truly authentic Portuguese experience.
Convento de São Francisco
An architecturally striking and remarkably versatile venue
This unconventional convent has, over the centuries, taken on many roles - from hospital and military barracks to textile factory. Today, following an impressive architectural restoration, it embraces a new identity as a thriving Cultural and Congress Centre. It is also the proud home of the Conference.
Situated within the Confraternity of Queen Saint Isabel, in the parish of Santa Clara, this Mannerist-style building offers a variety of appealing spaces, all imbued with a unique and captivating atmosphere. It can host up to 5,000 people simultaneously across its diverse rooms and auditoriums. The main auditorium - the crown jewel of São Francisco - seats 1,125 guests (a capacity comparable to Casa da Música) and is fully equipped with state-of-the-art facilities and technical resources. It provides outstanding conditions for both large-scale social events and ambitious scientific programs.
