Itinerary:
Cathedral Santa Maria de Coimbra and Cloisters.
Coimbra (Aeminium, in Roman times) has been an episcopal seat since the 5th century, succeeding the nearby Conímbriga. Despite its long history, there is no record of a cathedral until the construction of the Old Cathedral of Coimbra, which began in 1164 at the initiative of Bishop Miguel Salomão. It was consecrated in 1184, although the rest of the building had not yet been completed, and in 1185 the second king of Portugal, Sancho I of Portugal, was crowned there. It is the only Portuguese Romanesque cathedral from the Reconquista period to have survived relatively intact to the present day. The cloister began to be built in 1218, during the reign of Afonso II of Portugal, and was one of the first Gothic works constructed in Portugal. Owing to its larger-than-usual dimensions, part of the hillside had to be excavated for its construction. It therefore occupies a quadrangular area starting from the third bay of the nave and extending beyond the perimeter of the chancel. It consists of a vaulted storey, and the arcades are formed by double pointed arches resting on slender paired columns, topped by an oculus above.
